5th January 2008 - Goolwa Barrages - Murray Mouth, Hindmarsh Island, South Australia

A visit to the Barrages and the Murray River Mouth is a must when at Goolwa on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia.

The barrages were constructed in 1935 to prevent salt water entering the Murray River that prior to completion of construction in 1940, low flows , tidal effects and the intrusion of seawater were felt up to 250km upstream from the Murray River Mouth.

Plenty of day parking is available at the ferry terminal behind the Information Centre for a good view of the bridge and wharves and a drive around the Island after viewing the Mouth of the Murray is rewarding.
